By: | Tags: , , , | Comments: 0

Today’s topic is selecting clothing best suited for Southern California kayak fisherman. There is no set style, look, or requirement when outfitting for kayak fishing. Everyone has their own preference. Some like to dress the part and just put on some old clothes that are ratty, torn, faded and plain old ugly! In my opinion, it’s time to roll with the changes and advances in clothing and utilize them to not only keep you cool and dry in the heat, but also to help protect you from the elements. Trust […]

By: | Tags: , , , , | Comments: 0

We baited up at the carrier with smallish sized sardis and “Big Macs” of up to the 10″ variety! The wave conditions were a little choppy and settled into some 2′ rollers with the occasional 3′ stacked wave with chop. […]

Fishing the Pipe

By: | Tags: , , , , , , , | Comments: 0

Fishing the pipeline   If you’ve kayak fished Dana Point very much, you’ve probably heard people talking about “the pipe”.  There’s a secondary waste water treatment plant in the San Juan Creek bed just upstream from Doheny State Beach.  The treated waste water is pumped off shore through a 10,550 foot pipe under Doheny State Beach.  The pipe runs in a SSW direction out to about a 100 foot depth and then the diffuser runs another 1272 feet in a NW direction. The majority of this pipe is buried in […]

Kayak Live Bait Scoops Dana Point

By: | Tags: , , | Comments: 0

Live bait is one of those commodities that once were reserved for the big sport fishing boats and private boaters, 100+ gallon tanks, chocked full of well-cured fin bait.  While there are now many different options out there for kayak fisherman to carry self-sustained bait tanks on their kayak, that’s really not what I want to talk about; it’s how to fill the bait tank with quality bait. Most of the local harbors strictly cater to the big boats and the private boats.  A $25 “Half-Scoop” of bait overwhelm any […]
